The Work At Height Regulations - A Brief Synopsis

What is work at height?

Work in any place above OR below ground level.
Where a person could be injured if they fell from that place.

Who Are Duty Holders?

Employers.
Self Employed.
Anyone who controls the work of others.
Employees .

What Duties Do They Have?

Employers, Self-employed & those who control the work of others-

Plan & organise work at height.
Ensure those working at height are competent
Assess the risks from working at height.
Select & use appropriate work equipment.
Properly control risks from fragile surfaces.

Employees-

Report any safety hazard.
Use equipment properly.
Follow any training & instructions.
(Unless of course you think it would be unsafe).

Follow the hierarchy
of measures -

AVOID work at height where possible.

PREVENT
falls where work at height
cannot be avoided.

PROTECT
from the consequences of
A fall.

PROVIDE ADDITIONAL TRAINING
& INSTRUCTION
or take other
Suitable measures.

You must do all that is reasonably
Practicable to prevent anyone
Falling.
